Beautiful fields of sunflowers in Minnesota

Walking through sunflower fields in Minnesota is one of the best things to do this summer. And many of the best and most beautiful sunflower fields are in or near the Twin Cities. Sadly, but understandably, Fish Sunflowers made the difficult decision to stop planting sunflower fields in Minnesota. I’ve updated this post with more of the best sunflower fields in Minnesota. Additionally, learn some fun facts about sunflowers. Updated 09.09.23; originally published 08.02.20.

I’m planning to visit some more beautiful and new-to-me sunflower field locations in Minnesota in late July and August. That’s when the sunflower fields start blooming in Minnesota. And some sunflower fields bloom through September (like Andover Sunflower Field in the Twin Cities – and it’s free!). Although not all sunflower fields are free like Fish Sunflowers, they are still a budget-friendly thing for families to do this summer and early fall in Minnesota.

Waldoch Farm in Lino Lakes, MN offers one of the best paid sunflower fields for kids in Minnesota.

Last summer, my nieces, sister-in-law, and I experienced the sunflower walk at Joyer Adventure / Waldoch Farm in Lino Lakes, MN. While not free, this sunflower experience was worth the price of admission. The cost of admission is $14.99 for ages 3 and up.

However, you’ll find more than a beautiful sunflower field here. They offer pedal races, mazes, rope challenge, swings, tug-of-war, lots of props, and a barnyard of farm animals. And a tractor ride to the sunflower fields. Waldoch Farm is the the best sunflower field for kids in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Check out my full review.

While lilacs and tulips are my all-time favorite flowers, I gotta admit the sunflower is the happiest flower of them all. Their sunny disposition always makes me smile. I was super excited to learn that Minnesota has several sunflower fields / sunflower farms. As well as in nearby Wisconsin.

Watch for updates as I visit some of the best sunflower fields in Minnesota this summer.

Typically, Minnesota sunflower fields open late July through mid-September. Sunflowers bloom for seven to ten days. To help lengthen the sunflower season, farmers plant fields at different times. That way the sunflower fields bloom throughout the latter part of the summer.

Are Minnesota’s sunflower fields crowded?

Sunflower field with blue sky and clouds
While the sunflower fields in Minnesota attract many visitors, you’ll find lots of uncrowded spaces to enjoy the beautiful blooms.

From my experience visiting sunflower fields, crowds are not an issue. The sunflower fields in Minnesota attract a lot of people, but I discovered plenty of space and plenty of sunflowers to go around. In fact, I went around to the back of this sunflower field and it was pretty much just me.

Sunflower fun facts

Sunflowers are fascinating!

Here are some fun facts about sunflowers.

  • Sunflowers can grow as tall as 16 feet with a Guinness World Record of 30 feet and 1 inch.
  • These happy sunflowers always turn to face the sun (term called heliotropic) and at night return facing east waiting for the sun to rise in the morning.
  • While these sunflower fields listed in this post are located in Minnesota – the Land of 10,000 Lakes – Kansas is officially known as the Sunflower State.
  • Apparently, that head of sunflower is actually made up of smaller flowers.
  • There are more than 70 varieties of sunflowers.
  • Sustainability tips: you can repurpose a dried sunflower head as a scrubbing pad or leave the sunflower head outside for the birds to eat the seeds.

Beautiful peony farms and fields in Minnesota.

My husband and I loved Swenson Gardens’ peony fields, located in Howard Lake, Minn. Like sunflowers, they too have a short, but stunning, season. I had no idea there were so many varieties of peonies. And I did not know that you could grow no-stake peonies).

Swenson Gardens’ Peony Days in Howard Lake, Minn. are typically scheduled for two weekends in June every year. You can check their website and/or follow them on Facebook for more details. Summer is the time to order peonies as you’ll want to plant in early September. Many varieties sell out fast.
